School goes bilingual to stop bullying

Bullying is a huge issue in schools and one school has decided to go bilingual in order to inform and support parents.

Sioux City-area schools want to ensure parents who don’t speak English know how to address bullying if the issue works its way into the student’s home.

Maria Ruelas, head teacher for the Sioux City district’s English as Second Language program, said the language barrier is one of the biggest challenges when helping parents find out what school resources are available for their children.

The barrier can prevent non-English speaking parents from finding academic support, filing a bullying complaint or knowing who to talk to about their concerns……

“We want them to know we value their student’s education and that we take all of our students seriously and all of the complaints that we receive seriously,” Ferrie said. “It’s important to make our students and families feel welcome.”…….
